What is Java Programming?

Java is one of the most widely used and in-demand programming languages in the world. It powers millions of applications across web development, mobile apps, enterprise software, cloud computing, and large-scale business systems. Java is also the primary language used in the AP Computer Science A exam and is a core language taught in university-level computer science programs worldwide.

Learning Java gives your child a deep, transferable understanding of how software actually works not just surface-level scripting, but structured, professional programming. Java’s strict syntax and object-oriented structure make it one of the best languages for building strong programming fundamentals that apply to every other language a student will learn in the future.

At Edifychamps, our Java Programming course is taught live by expert instructors who guide students through every concept with hands-on coding, real-world projects, and personalised feedback from the very first class.

What Will Your Child Learn?

This course covers every stage of Java programming from writing the first line of code to designing and building complete object-oriented applications.

  • Java syntax, variables, data types, and operators
  • Conditional statements: if-else, nested conditions, and switch statements
  • Loops: for, while, do-while, nested loops, and pattern programming
  • Methods, parameters, return values, and method overloading
  • Arrays: one-dimensional, multi-dimensional, searching, and sorting
  • Object-Oriented Programming fundamentals: classes, objects, constructors, and encapsulation
  • Advanced OOP: inheritance, polymorphism, method overriding, abstract classes, and interfaces
  • Exception handling: try-catch blocks, error types, and error handling strategies
  • File input and output: reading from and writing to files
  • Data structures and algorithms: lists, collections, searching, and sorting
  • Real-world application development and final Capstone Project
  • Code reviews, debugging techniques, and software development best practices

By the end of the course, students will have built multiple Java projects and a complete Capstone application, a strong portfolio piece for college applications, CS competitions, and future studies.

Who is This Course For?

  • Students in Grades 7–12 who want to learn a professional-level programming language used in real-world software
  • Students preparing for AP Computer Science A who want to build a strong Java foundation ahead of the course
  • Students who have tried online tutorials but need structured, expert-guided instruction to truly progress
  • Students interested in software engineering, app development, or computer science at university
  • Parents who want their child to develop a highly employable, future-ready STEM skill

No prior coding experience is required. Students with some basic programming background will also benefit from the structured depth this course provides.

How Assessment Works

Students are assessed at every stage of the course, not just at the end, ensuring consistent progress and clear visibility for both student and parent.

Ongoing: Weekly coding assignments, module quizzes, programming challenges, and practical coding exercises keep skills building steadily throughout all 10 modules.

Project-Based: Mini coding projects, OOP-focused projects, and application development tasks ensure students apply every concept to real, working code.

Performance Review: Code reviews, debugging assessments, and problem-solving activities evaluate how students think and write code, not just whether answers are correct.

Final: A complete Capstone Project where each student designs, builds, tests, and presents a full Java application from scratch the centrepiece of their coding portfolio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need any prior programming experience?
No prior experience is needed. The course begins from absolute zero students learn Java from their very first session. Students who already have some coding background will also benefit from the structured depth and OOP focus of this curriculum.

What age group is this course designed for?
The course is built for students in Grades 7 through 12, ages 12 to 18. Younger students with strong logical thinking and a keen interest in technology may also be considered contact us to discuss readiness.

How is Java different from Python? Which should my child learn first?
Python is simpler to start with due to its relaxed syntax. Java is stricter and more structured, which builds stronger programming discipline and is directly used in AP Computer Science A. If your child aims to take AP CS A or pursue software engineering, Java is the stronger starting point. Both courses are available at Edifychamps.

Are the classes live or pre-recorded?
All classes are live, instructor-led online sessions. Students interact directly with their instructor in real time, share their screen, write and run code together, and receive immediate feedback on their work.

How long does the 100-class course take to complete?
At 2 classes per week, the course takes approximately 12 months. At 4 classes per week, it takes around 6 months. The schedule is fully flexible and can be adjusted to fit around school commitments and exam seasons.

What will my child have built by the end of the course?
Students will complete multiple Java projects throughout the course covering OOP applications, algorithm challenges, and file-based programs, plus a complete Capstone Project they design and build independently. These form a meaningful coding portfolio.
